"AGNUS DEI"
(Lamb of God) from A Mass for Winter Solstice
Cost $5.00
This piece was written in 1991 as part of a composite project involving
several Alaskan composers and poets, and was premiered by the Fairbanks Choral
Society. The style of the work (meaning the complete project) was to use the
traditional Roman Catholic mass, with each movement assigned to a different
Alaskan composer and with each movement containing a poem by an Alaskan poet!
Words of the traditional Latin chant (Agnus Dei, qui tollis peccata mundi,
miserere nobis, dona eis pacem) are combined with "Absence Wild", a
poem describing an Alaskan whiteout, written by Jerah Chadwick, who served on
the faculty of University of Alaska in Unalaska and directed UA's rural program
for the Aleutian Islands. The Agnus Dei is one of the movements which seems to
lend itself well to being performed separately, without the other movements. The
required musical forces are SATB choir, two soprano soloists, organ and tympani.

"AT
THE HOUR OF MIDNIGHT"
Cost: $5.00
The
Hispanic-flavored choir concert I was accompanying needed a special opening
number, preferably involving the children's chorus that regularly sang with
the Fairbanks Choral Society. I found this little traditional Spanish
folksong that seemed to fit our needs, and I decided to have the children
enter from the back of the auditorium singing their "LaLa" section;
this way the children would not have to concentrate on remembering a lot of
lyrics as they walked in. The adult choir was already on-stage, and we
also had a special guitarist with us for this concert, so I added him to the
mix. Program note: Any C instruments such as flute, oboe or
recorder may be used in place of, or in addition to, the guitar; Latin
American percussion instruments may also be added if desired. Price: $5.00

"BE
THOU STRONG"
Cost: $3.00
This 2-part song was written for performance by LDS Seminary classes in
Fairbanks, Alaska. It was also First Place winner in the Song division of the
All-Church Writing Contest in 1996. Original words were written by Tamara Hann,
adapted from the Old Testament books of Deuteronomy and Joshua. Accompaniment is
written for piano. Vocal ranges are average except for pp. 4-5 where one of the
parts sings an obligato which is high; but the piece can also be sung in unison
if desired. Performance time:

so there are occasional Spanish phrases used. The words are by Tamara Hann. It
would be appropriate on any general Christmas concert, with or without a Spanish
theme. The form of the piece is SATB with a unison children's part. The
accompaniment is piano with optional percussion instruments. It is meant to fun
and joyful, truly celebrating the birth of the Savior. Score includes all instruments. Performance time: 5 minutes. Price: $5.00

"COME,
COME, YE SAINTS" (arrangement)
Cost: $5.00
Originally published with two other hymn arrangements in a book, this
arrangement of a favorite LDS hymn is now offered singly. It has been performed
at several LDS church conferences and would be appropriate for any church choir
to perform any time of year. The ending is rather spectacular, which makes this
a good choice for a large meeting or choral concert. The accompaniment is piano,
but could be easily adapted to organ. The acappella section at the end of the
piece can also have piano accompaniment if desired. Performance time: 6 minutes. Price: $5.00

"COME
UNTO ME AND BE SAVED"
Cost: $5.00
We
were living in Germany in 1999 when our English-speaking LDS ward Relief
Society was given an assignment to provide a special musical number for a
stake women's conference. The general theme of the conference was
taken from 2nd Nephi (Book of Mormon); my frequent collaborator Tammy Hann adapted
a couple of the verses from that scripture into lyrics which I set to music.
The sisters of our Relief Society (Munich 4th Ward) learned the song and sang
it at the conference with me accompanying on the piano, and we received
numerous compliments on the song (in both German AND English). The
following year, I submitted the song to the LDS Church Writing Contest and it
was awarded the "Award of Distinction" (first place) in the Relief
Society division of the contest. Price: $5.00

"ETERNAL
THINGS"
The technique of pitting two melodies against each other has been very
popular in church music over the past few years. This little "short and
sweet" 2-part song could be sung by two groups of children, an SA choir, or
perhaps by children with parents or teachers. It is very simple and unassuming,
easy to learn and perform. PRICE: Free. Performance time: 2 minutes.

"I
WANT TO WALK IN THE SAVIOR'S PATH"
Cost: $5.00
Another piece using two melodies against each other, this song was written
for my grandson Colwyn's baptism, and won 1st place in the Children's Division
of the All-Church Writing Contest in 2005. It has since been performed SA by church choirs
and Relief Society choruses. Tamara Hann wrote the words. The song is simple but
beautiful, and is appropriate for any religious occasion, sung by children
and/or adults. Some of the words particularly speak of baptism, making it
especially fitting for that type of service. Performance

"JESUS,

Cost: $5.00
This has always been one of my favorite hymns, and when we lived in Germany a
few years ago, we happened to have both an excellent violinist and an excellent
cellist in our English-speaking LDS ward. So I made this arrangement of the hymn
for them (and myself on piano) to perform at church. This experience resulted in
my doing another arrangement, of "O Holy Night", for the same
ensemble. Score includes all instrumental parts. Performance time:

"PIONEERS!"
Cost: $3.00
A woodwind quartet featuring flute, oboe, B_flat clarinet and bassoon, this
is an instrumental medley consisting of three LDS hymns: "Come, Come, Ye
Saints", "They, the Builders of the Nation" and "Little
Pioneer Children". Because of the instrumentation, it probably would not be
appropriate for LDS sacrament meetings, but would be very nice to hear on a July
24th Pioneer Day program in the cultural hall or outside in a park, if you can
find these four instruments in your ward/community. Score includes
all instrumental parts. Performance time: 4-5 minutes. Price: $3.00

"SING GLORIA!"
Cost: $5.00
This Christmas choral piece was written in 1993 and premiered by University
of Alaska Fairbanks' Choir of the North. Original lyrics were written by Tamara
Hann, a great friend and frequent collaborator on many of my musical projects;
text for the midsection of the piece was taken from the Book of Isaiah. The
basic idea of the piece is to express great joy at the birth of the Savior. The
"joy" motive is further represented by the bright key of the piece (A
major), the lively tempo, and the 5/8 and 6/8 rhythms exchanged throughout the
piece. The piano accompaniment (written for two accomplished pianists) is in
four-hand form so that each part has its primary focus; the two bottom hands
maintain the rhythmic pulse, and the two top hands add "commentary" in
the form of short countermelodies. An orchestral score of the piece is also
available. Vocal score with piano parts. Performance time: Approx. 7 minutes. 15 pages. Price: $5.00

A Kentucky FolkHymn was the source of this piece, which is arranged for SATB
choir with Children, Organ, Brass and Percussion. The arrangement was premiered
by the Fairbanks Choral Society and Fairbanks Children's Choir and CHORUS! The
traditional poetry is beautiful and descriptive, and the music begins soft but
progresses in dynamics and key signature changes to add grandeur to the ending.

"STRENGTH

FREE
This catchy, fun little ditty was written for a young adult conference in
Anchorage, Alaska. The soft-shoe rhythm of the music suggests that this song
could be used best as a skit performed by one or two people or a larger group.
The song conveys the positive message that "There's strength in numbers
when together we stand; Strength in numbers, won't you give me your hand?"

Believe me,
when a piece of music indicates that both the music AND lyrics (adapt.)
are by Ann Kapp Andersen, you can bet that the music came first!
When I was organist for Fairbanks Lutheran Church back in the 90's, it took me
about 30 minutes to drive there from our house in the Goldstream Valley.
As I was driving in one Sunday morning, a tune started revolving around in my
head, and I had to keep singing it mentally to myself all during the services
so I wouldn't forget it. I sang it to myself again as I was driving
home, and at that point the words ("Teach me, dear Father...)" came
too. I didn't feel the piece was finished, however; something was
lacking. Then I started to think about the famous (to Mormons)
scripture, James 1:5-6, which inspired the Prophet Joseph Smith to "ask
of God" and led to the restoration of His gospel to the earth.
Because we're now living in such "politically correct" (or incorrect) times, I decided to change the phrase "all men" to
"His children" to be gender inclusive. The second voice part
expresses my personal testimony of and gratitude for the plan of
salvation our Father has given "liberally" to each of us. Price: $3.00

To Be a Woman
Cost: $3.00
This vocal trio was written in
the fall of 1999, shortly after we had moved to Germany, requested by an LDS
sister in Puyallup, Washington, for her stake’s Relief Society women’s
conference. I was nearly packed to fly out for a 3-month stay in
Fairbanks (to be music director for FLOT’s production of “Seven
Brides for Seven Brothers”), when the call for this piece came in. It
offered an opportunity I hated to pass up, so I started thinking. I immediately
contacted my “word person”, Tammy Hann, and gave her a few measures
of a melody I came up with, and the song was completed very quickly; in fact, I
remember punching in about 2/3 of the music and words before I left town,
and as soon as I arrived in Fairbanks and got settled, I put the rest of it in
via a system Thayne (my resident computer genius) had devised, where I would
send him the score, he would get it set on his computer, and then HE would have
to send it to the lady in Puyallup! Anyway, somehow the song got written
and forwarded to Washington; and I was later notified that it was performed for
the women’s conference with great success.

WORTHY TO ENTER
COST: $3.00
This piece was written for a
group of Young Women to sing as part of a Fairbanks Stake Relief Society
women’s conference. It would be appropriate performed as a solo or
duet at any YW standards night or other meeting. In the last chorus,
there is a modulation and the melody is taken by the altos with a higher
obligato sung by the sopranos. Tammy Hann again wrote the inspiring
lyrics.

Your Heart Will Turn
COST: $3.00
When our daughter Amy was
called on an LDS Church mission to Cebu, Philippines, we decided to have an
openhouse at our home in Fairbanks. I wrote this simple missionary piece,
and Martha Hirt, mom of Amy’s best friend Julia, and I sang it at
the party. I had asked my faithful collaborator, Tammy Hann, to pen some
lyrics, and I also wanted to insert a space in the song for the location of the
person’s mission. This vocal duet may or may not be appropriate for
LDS sacrament meetings (check with your local authorities); but it is a fun as
well as spiritual addition to a farewell party or openhouse held for the
departing missionary.
